Born in Communist Poland, Jacek Zaluski's artistic vision was shaped by a world where colour was a rarity. Daily life unfolded against a backdrop of grey architecture and subdued existence, punctuated only occasionally by the vibrant colours of hand-painted posters, religious celebrations and seasonal festivals. Growing up in a society where many sought relief from hardship through alcohol, he experienced first-hand the emotional contrasts that would later become central to his work.
Some of his earliest memories are auditory rather than visual. Living near a speedway circuit, he fell asleep to the sound of racing motorcycles. Those childhood experiences resurfaced decades later in one of his most personal photographic projects—a black-and-white documentary study of Britain's motorcycle and biker communities during the 1990s.
Moving from Eastern Europe to the West proved transformative. The sudden explosion of colour, abundance and creative freedom left a lasting impression. Experiencing two radically different visual cultures instilled a lifelong fascination with contrast—between colour and monochrome, scarcity and excess, order and experimentation.
He began studying and emulating his favourite artists during school art classes. While his teachers often dismissed his artistic influences and offered little encouragement, those early experiences strengthened his independence as a creative thinker. They also established a belief that has remained central to his practice: art should move the viewer emotionally, regardless of style, medium or convention.
Photography and cinema soon became equally important influences. Drawn to experimental photography and early avant-garde filmmaking, Jacek developed an enduring interest in pushing beyond traditional methods of image-making. Art school encouraged this spirit of experimentation, providing an environment in which curiosity and innovation flourished.
The transition from education to professional life, however, presented a different reality. Commercial work demanded practical solutions rather than artistic exploration. Like many creatives, he built a successful career producing work that paid the bills while leaving little opportunity for personal experimentation.
A serious long-term illness forced him to slow down and reconsider his priorities. During recovery, creative ambitions gave way to the more immediate challenge of rebuilding his health. That period ultimately became a turning point. With renewed energy and perspective, he has returned to making the work that first inspired him—creating without compromise, embracing experimentation and allowing curiosity to guide the creative process.
Today, Jacek Zaluski's work reflects a lifetime spent navigating between cultures, disciplines and artistic traditions. Drawing upon documentary photography, portraiture, fashion, abstraction and digital art, he creates images that explore memory, identity and atmosphere. His practice is less concerned with recording the visible world than with evoking emotion and inviting viewers to bring their own experiences and interpretations to each piece.
For Jacek, the most enduring works of art are those that resonate long after they have been seen. That belief continues to define both his creative philosophy and his artistic practice.
